How Many Hours to Study for NEET: A Realistic Daily Plan
By Balmike Kumar, maker of the Pagewood app · Updated
Most NEET aspirants do well with 6 to 8 hours of focused self-study a day in the final year, plus school or coaching; class 11 students can start with 3 to 4. The right number is the one you can repeat every day for months.
Why "hours" is the wrong first question
NEET UG tests 180 questions across Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology), for 720 marks. Check the latest pattern on the official NTA NEET site. Most of the paper is based on the NCERT syllabus of classes 11 and 12. What decides your score is how much of that syllabus you can recall and apply under time pressure, not how long you sat at a desk.
So measure focused hours, not desk hours. A student who does 5 truly focused hours often beats one who sits for 10 with a phone on the desk.
Realistic daily hours
| Stage | Self-study per day | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Class 11, with school | 3–4 hours | Build the habit; finish NCERT chapters as taught |
| Class 12, with school + coaching | 5–7 hours | Revise class 11 in parallel |
| Dropper (no school) | 7–9 hours | Plus coaching; one rest half-day a week |
| Last 60 days | 8–10 hours | Mostly mock tests, error analysis and revision |
These are common ranges from aspirants and teachers, not official guidance. Adjust to your sleep, health and coaching schedule.
A sample day (class 12 with coaching)
| Time | What |
|---|---|
| 6:00–6:50 | Biology NCERT reading (50-min block) |
| 7:00–7:25 | Formula revision (Pomodoro) |
| School / coaching | — |
| 17:00–17:50 | Homework / DPP (count-up) |
| 18:00–18:50 | Physics questions (50-min block) |
| 20:00–20:50 | Chemistry: weak chapter |
| 21:00–21:25 | Revise the day's notes |
Make each hour count
- NCERT first. Read it line by line, especially for Biology.
- Questions every day. Reading without solving gives a false sense of progress.
- Weekly mock test in the final year, then a block to analyse every mistake.
- Track by subject. Tag sessions so you notice if one subject is being skipped.
- Phone away. Use an app blocker if you need the phone for lectures or PDFs.
